“Becoming” is a representation of the transition from boy to man, with all its beauties and pains. The reader will find the poems young and hungry at first, growing to wear the pages as their bodies, deepening in voice, reaching for wholeness.

The poet, Chisom Victor, looks within and beyond for answers to the lifelong puzzle of “what makes a man.” The body or ideologies? The failures or the masks? The desires or character? When does this begin? When does one become? How does one “teach a boy to be a man?”

This collection gives a voice to many thoughts that have been locked in for far too long. The poet briefly writes about “the unspoken” feelings for his muse, and then turns around to sing in admiration for “medicine woman” in what the author considers a personal favourite. “Becoming” promises to take the reader’s thoughts on a spin.
